On 9 September 2026, SYMBA continued its Industrial Symbiosis Days initiative with a dedicated session for Spain, bringing together around 20 participants for an online exchange on the practical implementation of industrial symbiosis. The Spanish edition was organised by SYMBA partner Cetaqua together with VIRATEC, with the participation of the IndusSym CoruΓ±a project, invited to share its experience and a concrete case study from the Galician industrial ecosystem.

The session combined an introduction to SYMBA and the fundamentals of industrial symbiosis with practical examples and interactive discussion. Participants explored the key conditions that can enable successful symbiotic exchanges, including the availability of resources, the capacity of potential recipients to use them and the creation of mutual value between participating organisations.

Followed an interesting contribution from IndusSym CoruΓ±a, which presented its experience in identifying and assessing material, water and energy flows within a real industrial ecosystem. The case offered a practical perspective on how potential synergies can be detected and evaluated, helping connect the concepts discussed within SYMBA with concrete industrial applications.

The event also provided valuable space for interaction. Through a series of live polls, participants discussed the main barriers currently limiting the implementation of industrial symbiosis, highlighting issues such as trust and confidentiality between companies, regulatory complexity, difficulties in accessing reliable resource data and administrative burdens. Potential connections between waste and by-product streams and new uses were also explored, with sewage sludge emerging as a particularly interesting stream for further valorisation.

The session closed on a very positive note, with participants expressing a very high level of interest in exploring industrial symbiosis opportunities within their own organisations. For SYMBA, the Industrial Symbiosis Days are an important opportunity to bring together projects, companies and other relevant actors, exchange practical experiences and better understand the conditions needed to turn potential synergies into real industrial collaborations.
