We are pleased to announce the publication of a SYMBA dedicated article in News Packaging, thanks to the contribution of our partners AIMPLAS, Antonio OrdovΓ‘s and Abdulaziz Aldureid.
The article explores how industrial symbiosis can support the transition towards a more circular and sustainable plastics and packaging sector, addressing one of Europe’s most pressing environmental challenges: the growing generation of plastic packaging waste.
Starting from the current limitations of traditional waste management approaches, the article presents SYMBA’s vision of moving beyond isolated solutions by fostering interconnected industrial systems, where the by-products and residual materials generated by one company can become valuable resources for another. This collaborative approach aims to reduce waste, increase resource efficiency and create new opportunities for sustainable industrial development.
The publication also highlights the methodology developed within SYMBA, which combines multicriteria assessment, life cycle analysis, dedicated databases, digital tools and artificial intelligence to identify, evaluate and prioritise the most sustainable and replicable industrial symbiosis solutions.
Particular attention is given to the importance of waste characterisation, stakeholder engagement and the validation of proposed solutions in pilot regions, all key elements for ensuring the practical implementation and scalability of industrial symbiosis models across Europe.
By showcasing SYMBA’s innovative framework and objectives, the article contributes to raising awareness among industry professionals about the potential of industrial symbiosis to transform the plastics and packaging value chain and accelerate the transition towards a circular economy.
The article is available in both Spanish and English and can be consulted at this link from pages 40 to 42.
