From March 17β19 in Fribourg, Switzerland, SYMBA was proudly represented at BIOKET 2026, the premier annual international conference driving Key Enabling Technologies and innovations in biomass valorization. The event unites top stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions and advance high-value products across industries.
Together with the project coordinator, ENCO, SYMBA engaged with a wide audience throughout the event. At stand 20, the team welcomed strong interest from participants, sparking insightful discussions around the projectβs vision, its innovative approach to industrial symbiosis, and its potential impact on the bioeconomy.
A key highlight of our participation was the oral presentation delivered on 18 March by SYMBAβs coordinator, Antonietta Pizza, titled βSYMBA: Smart Symbiosis and AI-Driven Process Modelling for a Circular Bioeconomyβ. The presentation provided an in-depth look at the projectβs core approach and technological backbone.
At the heart of SYMBA lies a data-driven, AI-assisted process modelling framework designed to optimise Operational Expenditures (OPEX), minimise waste, and improve systemic performance. By leveraging automation, big data analytics, and advanced informatics, SYMBA enables industries to design and manage resource exchanges that enhance operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
Aligned with BIOKET 2026βs focus on process modelling and analytical methods, SYMBA demonstrated how AI, automation, and Key Enabling Technologies can effectively operationalise industrial symbiosis and support the digitalisation of the bio-based sector.
Importantly, we also took the opportunity to highlight SYMBAβs collaboration throughout the project with Hubs4Circularity, with whom we share a common forum and strategic vision. This synergy reinforces our joint efforts to foster knowledge exchange, scale up industrial symbiosis practices, and accelerate the transition towards a more circular and resource-efficient European industry.
By bridging biotechnology, informatics, and systemic process design, SYMBA contributes to building a circular, economically optimised, and resilient European bioeconomy, one that strengthens climate resilience, improves safety and sustainability, and transforms waste into valuable resources.
