The SYMBA project has been recognised as a pioneering initiative in the field of industrial symbiosis, underscoring its strong contribution to advancing circular economy practices in Europe.

This recognition was highlighted in an article published on 25 September in the German journal Nachhaltige Technologien, which explored the role of Hubs4Circularity initiatives, a concept and network with which SYMBA closely collaborates.

As the article explains, industrial and industrial-urban symbiosis have long been key components in achieving Europe’s goals of climate neutrality and circularity by 2050. Despite their technical feasibility and environmental advantages, these initiatives have often struggled to scale beyond individual pilot experiences. The Hub4Circularity model seeks to overcome this limitation by connecting public and private stakeholders across Europe to develop concrete, scalable, and sustainable solutions for resource and energy reuse.

In this context, SYMBA was cited as an exemplary project, having analysed more than 150 industrial symbiosis solutions across Europe using a multicriteria assessment model. Each solution was evaluated according to weighted criteria, including suitability for symbiosis, environmental performance, organisational conditions, legal and economic requirements, and social and ethical acceptability.

Through this comprehensive approach, SYMBA contributes to building a shared knowledge base and developing decision-support tools that promote the wider implementation of industrial and industrial-urban symbiosis within Europe’s circular economy landscape.
