SYMBA has concluded the selection process of four High Potential Regions that will serve as demonstration sites for the validation and application of its symbiotic methodology.

The selection followed a structured and collaborative process. A call for participants was launched to ensure the inclusion of a sufficient number of suitable regions across Europe. The selection criteria focused on geographic diversity, bio-based potential, interest in developing local bio-based value chains, and a clear commitment to actively participate in the project and implement the SYMBA methodology.

In preparation for the call, a series of internal discussions and brainstorming were conducted to define the expectations for demonstration regions, clarify the methodology to be applied, and align on the selection criteria.

The identification process adopted a tailored and research-based approach. ICLEI explored its network and partner organizations involved in several Horizon Europe projects, such as H4C EcoP, REDOL, SYMSITES, Circular Biocarbon, and the CCRI Thematic Working Group on Industrial Symbiosis. This work was supported by desk research, including findings from the Database of IS Solutions.

Further contributions were provided by project partners who leveraged their respective networks to identify potential demonstration sites. The call was also promoted through the Circular City Declaration and SYMBA LinkedIn pages.

Each region will contribute to the testing and validation of the methodology through real-world implementation and exchange with the broader SYMBA community.

The selected regions are displayed on the High Potential Regions section of the SYMBA website, discover them!
