CETAQUA is a water technological centre that aims to promote the application and transference of scientific knowledge to the water world and environment.

The SYMBA Project aims to promote a new and innovative Industrial Symbiosis methodology that can be useful across the European Union. The SYMBA Project is aligned with the EU Bioeconomy Strategy and it aims to create and validate this IS methodology for the bio-based sector. SYMBA is a cutting-edge approach that enhances the path towards aΒ  circular and sustainable economy.

CETAQUA has developed a compilation of IS solutions across Europe regarding Industrial Symbiosis in terms of state of the play, value chains, societal and legal barriers, stakeholders, etc. The mapping of IS solutions has been developed from different sources such as legislation implemented at European, national and regional levels, programs, projects and initiatives that use IS solutions, statistical reports and databases, and scientific peer-reviewed reports.

The mapping of IS solutions has been based on the use of secondary raw materials, reduction of consumption of virgin materials, renewable energy, GHG emissions, carbon capture, waste and wastewater streams.Β  Moreover, the gathering of IS solutions are classified into the main resources such as plastics, water, metals, energy, etc, in order to find different opportunities into the bio-based value chains (textile, agri-food, plastics and packaging wastewater and water).

CETAQUA classified the different types of IS solutions in accordance with their nature in platforms, which can be used as exchange media of by-products and resources between companies, methodologies based on EU projects, and approaches which are self-organized and spontaneous symbiosis between companies, normally started due to the necessity of reduction of energy and resource consumption.
